The Dunfermline Golf Club, sometimes referred to as Pitfirrane Golf Club, is one of the best parkland courses in Fife. The club was founded in 1887 and has relocated three times since the early days. J.R. Stutt of Paisley designed the undulating and rather testing parkland course and there are no fewer than five par fives, the longest of which is the 528-yard 18th, Halkett’s Hame. At times it can be a daunting task making par, but a challenge and a lot of fun nonetheless. The five par threes are stunning, with the 13th and 16th being perfect examples.
No need for a driver. A nice 3 wood will leave a short iron to the green. Left side of fairway is
best and watch out for the bunkers on the right.
Take one more club than you think. If you can’t carry the bunker then bail out right and play for
the up-and-down. 4 is no disgrace.
Favour left side of fairway. If in doubt don’t try to carry cross bunker with 2nd shot, it’s further
away than it looks!
Keep the tee shot to left side of fairway. 2nd shot is often blind, so check your line and the
wind can be a big factor.
Favour the left side as slopes will gather the ball to the right. It’s a long green so don’t be
short.
Gentle dog-leg and a controlled left-right shape ideal but caution from the tee is wise. A 3 wood from the tee is often a smart play especially with wind behind.
Another dog-leg to the right. Keep drive close to marker pole line and this is a gentle par 5 with no hidden danger. Right side of marker can leave a blocked 2nd shot.
Don’t go left off tee and there is more room on the right than it appears. This green runs away
from you so take a club less for your approach.
Long green makes club selection vital. All the trouble is short, so like the 5th, be up!
Favour right half off the tee as the ball gathers to the left. Take an extra club with 2nd shot and
make sure to clear the bunker on the right.
Short par 4 and it’s essential to keep the ball in play off the tee for a good birdie chance.
The safe drive is to the right half of the fairway and this opens up the green. No hidden dangers.
No margin for error here. Check the yardage and add at least 1 club as a short shot is unduly punished!
One of the toughest holes on the course. An accurate drive is a must. The approach to the green is protected by bunkers left and right, so birdie putts are rare!
Difficult to reach in two due to upslope to the green. A sensible play is to lay-up short of cross bunkers with 2nd shot.
Most trouble comes from the bunkers at the front so consider taking at least 1 club more than you think. Wind direction is significant with this tee shot.
Do not go right and left of marker avoids trouble. 2nd shot is blind as green is below fairway level. Approach to green can be 2 clubs less due to steep slope down to the green. Keep left of the marker beyond the green. The slope will gather the ball.
Straight drive required and left side is safer than right side of fairway. Staying on the fairway makes this a fairly straightforward par 5.
