Winter Programme 2017/2018

Mid Winter Report

Dear Members

Mid-Winter Greens Condition Report

As we continue our efforts to improve the course and gain better value for money we decided to take up a free offer from Paul Miller, Agronomist, for a Winter Review to help us plan for the beginning of the season.

Our key objective this year and beyond, is to try and bring the greens readiness and optimum playing quality forward earlier than in previous years, subject to the weather conditions.

We are putting a plan together to apply different chemicals that encourage earlier growth, applied in similar locations, and actions to report, build and measure several aspects of soils, but in particular the soil heat, which is fundamental to growth. In addition, with the use of the data to support our decision-making and
communication, we want to establish a support group (or ‘Turf Club’) of greenskeepers in the Forth valley, from a small selection of similar parkland clubs. Hopefully we can share “Best Practice’ and increase our understanding from any appropriate “Best Practice’ to continue to improve Dunfermline Golf Club.

Overall, our greens are slowly improving but with the amount of rainfall last year some greens still retain a high amount of standing water. Our use of the Air2G2 aeration programme is helping reduce the lower compaction of the greens and we will continue the programme in 2018.

On bunkers, our progress on 5th hole is good and we plan to rebuild the bunkers and address the associated drainage issues at 4th and 14th from 5th February. The 6th hole efforts and increased drainage are much slower primarily due to the location which takes much longer to defrost. Please bear with us as this work progresses.

Woodland Management - you will have noticed that a number of trees have been spot painted. We have produced a 5-year strategy document and an Outline Plan for members comments and understanding, but distribution to members is proving difficult because of the volume of photographs included. We hope to produce copies for members consumption on the notice board and bar. It will be published on the website this week.

Finally, thank you for your patience as work continues. Enjoy your golf and please keep safe as the footfall remains quite wet and slippy.

Kind regards

John McNeill
